PREVIEW:
Define “comparative education”. (4)

Comparative education is a field of study that involves the systematic analysis and comparison of
educational systems, policies, practices, and outcomes across different countries or regions. It aims
to understand the similarities, differences, and underlying factors that influence education systems
around the world. Comparative education seeks to provide insights into various aspects of education,
such as curriculum design, teaching methods, educational policies, cultural influences,
socioeconomic contexts, and their impacts on student learning and development. This field helps
researchers, policymakers, and educators gain a broader perspective on global education trends,
challenges, and opportunities by examining how different societies approach education and address
their unique needs and goals.

Discuss any four phases of the historical evolution of the field of comparative and
international education. (8)
The field of comparative and international education has undergone several phases of historical evolution as
it developed and matured over time. Here are four key phases that highlight its progression:Exploratory
Phase (Late 19th to Early 20th Century): During this phase, scholars began to take an interest in comparing
different educational systems and practices across countries. The focus was largely on describing and
cataloging educational systems, curricula, and teaching methods in various parts of the world.
