Define the following terms:
1.1 Planet:
A celestial body that orbits a star, is spherical in shape due to its own gravity, and has cleared its
orbit of other debris. Examples include Earth, Mars, and Jupiter.
1.2 Oort Cloud:
A hypothetical region in the outermost part of the solar system, believed to contain a vast
collection of icy bodies and comets. It is thought to be the source of long-period comets.
1.3 Solar System:
A star system consisting of a central star (the Sun) and various celestial bodies, such as planets,
moons, asteroids, and comets, that orbit around it due to gravitational attraction.
1.4 Galaxy:
A massive system of stars, stellar remnants, interstellar gas, dust, and dark matter, all bound
together by gravity. The Milky Way is the galaxy in which our solar system resides.
1.5 The Moon:
Earth's natural satellite, orbiting our planet. It plays a significant role in influencing tides and has
been a subject of scientific study and human exploration.
1.6 Atmosphere:
The layer of gases surrounding a planet or celestial body, held in place by gravity. Earth's
atmosphere consists of various gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and others.
1.7 Earth:
The third planet from the Sun, characterized by its diverse ecosystems, oceans, and atmosphere
that supports life as we know it.
1.8 Lithosphere:
The rigid outer layer of a planet, including Earth, that encompasses the crust and the uppermost
portion of the mantle. It is divided into tectonic plates that can move and interact with each
other.
1.9 A star:
A luminous celestial object primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, undergoing nuclear
fusion in its core, which releases energy in the form of light and heat. The Sun is a star.
1.10 Universe:
The entirety of space, time, matter, energy, and all the structures within it, including galaxies,
stars, planets, and everything else. It encompasses all that exists on a cosmic scale.
