The Thompson family faces socio-economic strain due to Mrs Thompson low

paying job. She is a single mother to her 12-year-old son, Michael, with his

father working in another province and only visiting during Christmas and

the New Year holidays. While the father does contribute some of his earnings

to the family, his absence most of the time leaves Mrs Thompson as the

primary caregiver. The father also has a criminal record for theft. The family

lives in a neighbourhood with limited resources and high crime rates. As the

primary breadwinner, Ms. Thompson works long hours, leaving Michael

unsupervised during after-school hours. The lack of parental supervision and

emotional support, along with limited opportunities for growth, could

potentially expose Michael to risk behaviour. Additionally, Michael’s

grandparents also live with the family. The grandfather tends to engage in

conflict between himself and the grandmother.
