Black power movement

1 Aaaaaaa Reasons for the movement

○ Although the CVM achieved great success in the south. African
Americans in the northern states felt like they had been ignored. This
led them to turn to Black power.
○ 1965 50% of blacks were living in the north in Ghettos dealing with
poor housing, schools and unemployment.
○ Many African Americans drifted into gangs and and became engaged
in illicit activity.
○ The police provided little protection and were often guilty of brutality
towards AAs
○ As these conditions continued people started to believe the CRM was
not effective/inadequate
○ They began to reject MLK’s strategies and looked for more assertive
ways of resisting.
○ “They did not see the point of integrating lunch counters in diners
when they didn’t have the money to eat in such diners”
○ Black power was the movement based on the concept that
communities would organise themselves to gain political power

, ○ Black power was not a formal organisation this resulted in different
emphases
○ Malcom X believed in black nationalism- separation and self
determination rather than integration with whites.
○ The growth of the black power movement coincided with riots and
revolved around the issue of poor housing and police brutality
○ August 1965- Rioting in the LA (Watts district) left 34 dead and
hundreds injured with 4000 arrested
○ By 1966 the was severe rioting in 38 cities and in 1967 Detroit and
Newark were looted and burned
○ Keener commission investigated the unrest and found out that:
● 40% of AA’s were living under the poverty line
● Twice as many AA men were unemployed that white men
● 3x as many AAs were in poorly paid jobs
○ Thus they concluded the primary reason for unrest was white racism
