Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
Write 300 - 500 words.
This essay is an evaluation of the text Cutting Edge Advanced. In this essay I will provide a general analysis
of the text by using the checklist from unit 10 (Evaluating course book material). Furthermore, in this essay
I will state whether or not I would use this text with an advanced class.
The material provided by the text Cutting Edge advanced is clearly structured. The structure follows a
logical order and each stage of the lesson is outlined clearly. The material is appropriately graded for the
advanced level of the students and the activities in the text allow for practice, revision, and recycling of
course material. The material creates the possibility to address various aspects of language improvement
such as reading and writing, but also skills such as listening and speaking.
The activities found within the text are designed to function of tools in order to evaluate students’
understanding and provides a good baseline for the lesson, as well as allowing for both individual and
group practice. The language used within the text is appropriate for advanced students. The topics are
practical and I feel that they will improve the language of advanced students, as learning things like ellipses
(their function in language) will help students to sound more natural when they speak English.
The material is on the pages is not cluttered, and is attractive to the students. This makes it possible to gain
and hold students’ attention. The topics are not offensive or personal to members of the class, which
means that the topics are objective and accessible to all of the students (meaning that the topics can be of
concern to all of the students, not just the very few). The objectivity and accessibility of the topics makes it
possible for the students to focus on the language being taught. The various characters, with various
realities and language needs may engage and interest the students in the lesson.
According to the description of this assignment I am teaching English to students in a country where English
is the dominant language, and therefore the book should be affordable to either the students themselves,
or their parents. There are no referring pages or vocabulary lists. In my opinion, the given material would
be suitable to be used in my lessons.
