Assignment 02:
An Account describes how and why you would teach in the manner that you
have chosen.
This means that you need to justify your methodology by referring to the
current theories and principles of language teaching and learning. It is a detailed
account in continuous prose, which supports how your outcomes will be achieved
through the methodologies that you have chosen. Equally important are:
he duration of your lesson;
he grade and language level involved;
ow you would introduce the topic;
ow you would get your learners to participate;
ow you would facilitate the different activities for the lesson;
Reason/s to justify your teaching strategies and activities during the
whole lesson.
You might want to include written/oral exercises in the lesson, but you would have to
explain how and why this would be done. If you are a practising teacher, you might
want to describe a lesson that you have already taught. In this instance, the inclusion
of how your learners responded to your strategies would be an acceptable
justification.
In a lesson account, we prefer a more personal, reflective first-person voice which
shows your knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the needs of your individual learners.
Use the headings provided and number your activities.
The assessment grids in this tutorial letter give detailed guidelines concerning our
expectations. Please take them into consideration when you write your assignments.
What will earn you good marks is proof that you understand and can
effectively
apply the principles that guide your choice of methodology in your
teaching. In other words, we look at quality as opposed to quantity.

,Guide to assignment 2
You have THREE options in this assignment. You are expected to choose ONE.
Once you have decided which one of the three options you want to answer, read the
relevant study units in the Study Guide associated with the option. Pre-reading these
units will help you to have the adequate knowledge that is essential for writing a
lesson account.
It will also expose you to the different theoretical bases and practical reasons you
can use to explain the choice of your teaching strategies. After the preparatory
reading, follow the instructions carefully and refer to the assessment grid on page 16
of Tutorial 101 for the key criteria that will be used to mark Assignment 2. This would
guide you on how to adequately respond to you have chosen to answer.
The focus of this assignment is to present a lesson account. This means that in
addition to describing what a n d how y o u h a v e t a u g h t o r w o u l d
hav e ta u g h t , you are expected to provide reasons for the different activities
and strategies you have used throughout the lesson (the why). The justification
should be provided within the lesson account. This aspect of the lesson
account has been awarded 10 marks because of its importance.
Refer to the example of a lesson account in Unit 9, of your study guide. Use it
to structure your own lesson account, which should be more detailed and creative.
Take particular note of how the roles of the teacher and learners are
justified for the specific activities chosen for this lesson. For justification,
you can refer to specific language learning and teaching theories to justify
your teaching strategies such as group work or silent reading.
You can also refer to your learners’ context by referring to issues such
as low or high language proficiency, large classes etc.
In addition, you can indicate how your teaching strategies/learners’
activities achieve the specific lesson outcomes/objectives you have
identified at the beginning of your lesson account.
2
,For purposes of illustrating the difference between activity design and a lesson
account, we have used the same activities for assignment 01 and put in bold the
justification (why) for the teaching strategies throughout the activities described. This
should help you to know how to justify your lesson account for this assignment. You
are expected to apply these practices/principles to the topic you choose for
assignment 02.

, Option C: Visual literacy
Question 1
Lesson account
GRADE: 10
DURATION: 80 Minutes
Lesson outcomes: Learners should know how:
To view and read for understanding what is on the advert and to evaluate
it critically;
To listen for information and respond appropriately and critically;
Be able to establish which audience the advert is trying to persuade;
To acknowledge what message is being portrayed by the advert and;
To establish hidden messages on the advert.
Resources: People Magazine Fanta Advertisement; Dictionary; Interactive
learners’ textbook, the Internet (on one smart phone of which the teacher
monitored the process) and Stationary for the creative group activity
(markers, charts, glue, stickers)
Introduction to the lesson:
Visual literacy requires critical thinking, observation and listening skills as well
as the ability to discern messages and meanings embedded in print media
(Ferreira, 2009; Makina, B. & Lephalala M.M.K, 2012). The lesson will be
based on the Fanta Orange advertisement from People Magazine. I led a
brainstorming session to enable the development of the necessary skills needed
to increase critical awareness and manipulation of language in advertising and
this enabled learners to interact with the image and words applied on the
advertisement and the product. The class discussion centred on the following
questions: What is the effect of the captions in this advertisement? What is the
purpose of this advert? Who commissioned the advert? Who is the advert meant
