Procedure: Consider: Cu2+ + 2e - -> Cu(s) = reduction Fe(s) -> Fe2+ + 2e- = oxidation Part 1: 1. Utilizing a lightbulb device, we tested the conductive of the following items: a. Metal cylinder  good conductor (bright light) b. Water  poor conductor (no light) c. Sugar water  poor conductor (no light) d. KCl water good condu ctor (bright light) e. Coke  slight conduction (light) Part 2: 1. Place a shiny nail in a test tube with copper sulfate (copper ions present) 2. Allow it to set for a about 30 seconds 3. Lastly, we pulled the nail out of the solution & observed a thin layer of copper on the nail Part 3: 1. A test tube with HCl was placed in a beaker. 2. A magnesium ribbon was placed in the test tube 3. Observed the reaction a. Steaming (thermochemical reaction – heat producing), bubbling (this is H2 gas) Part 4: 1. A sheet of copper metal was placed into a beaker with an Fe2+ solution 2. However, we did not observe the same reaction as the previous 3. There was no reaction Part 5: 1. We constructed a voltaic cell using copper (cathode) 1.0M solution & zinc (anode) 1.0 M solution a. It is important that both solutions are 1.0 M because it ensure standard conditions 2. A copper wire & mossy zinc wire were attached to the alligator clips on the wire attached to the meter
