Summary of the Novel

Mathilde Loisel is a stay-at-home Parisian who dreams of a life
of ostentation, wealth and elegance. She is the wife of a small
employee , whom she married for lack of anything better, but
who does a lot for her.
One day, he arrives with an invitation for a party at the
Ministry, and in order not to let his rank show through, she
borrows a necklace from her friend, Jeanne Forestier, who is
part of the beautiful world she dreams of. to
frequent. Returning home, she realizes that she has lost the
necklace. All the research does not change anything, and the
precious jewel remains untraceable. She dares not say
anything to her friend, preferring to deceive her by buying her
an identical one, but worth 40,000 francs , then heavily
indebting her household to repay the credits incurred: they
move, send the maid away, and she "knew the horrible life of
the needy”the husband does painful little writing after his
work, and she is obliged to do all the menial tasks previously
reserved for servants, and that for ten years.
At the end of these ten years of hardship, Madame Loisel one
day crosses paths with Madame Forestier , "still young, still
beautiful" , and judges that it is time to confess the truth to
her. First, Madame Forestier does not recognize Madame
Loisel. She then replies, sorry:
" Oh ! my poor Matilda! But mine was wrong. It was worth at
most five hundred francs! »
