Assignment 02 – Research-based essay

Compulsory: Yes

Due Date: 12 September 2023

Instruction: With reference to the quote above, discuss THREE (3) negative
impacts of academic procrastination. In the last paragraph, discuss TWO (2)
recommendations that students can adopt to overcome procrastination. Your
response should include a minimum of FIVE (5) credible sources. Total: [50
marks

Academic procrastination refers to the habit of delaying tasks related to academics,
often leading to poor performance and increased stress levels among students. This
detrimental behaviour can have several negative impacts on students. In this essay, I
will discuss three negative impacts of academic procrastination and provide two
recommendations for students to overcome this habit.

One negative impact of academic procrastination is decreased overall academic
performance. When students continuously postpone their tasks until the last minute,
they do not have sufficient time to thoroughly understand the concepts and produce
high-quality work. This can result in lower grades on assignments, tests, and exams,
ultimately affecting their overall academic performance. According to a study
published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, academic procrastination was
significantly associated with lower final course grades and overall GPA.

Another negative impact is increased stress levels. Procrastination puts a heavy
burden on students as they constantly feel rushed to complete their tasks right
before the deadline. This leads to elevated stress levels, as they have to manage
multiple unfinished assignments simultaneously. A research article published in the
Journal of Counseling Psychology found that academic procrastination was
positively correlated with increased levels of stress and anxiety among students.
