TITLE: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
ENGAGEMENT AND BURNOUT AT H.P HOLDINGS, EDENVALE,
SOUTH AFRICA.INTRODUCTION
Burnout and work engagement are two topical issues in the workplace. These two issues
can be said to be working in antagonism because when an employee is suffering from
burnout, their work engagement in the workplace decreases. When chronic workplace
stress is not managed successfully, the result is burnout. Work engagement refers to
emotional and mental connection that employees feel towards their organization, their
teams and the work they do. This research proposal focuses on the investigation into the
relationship between engagement and burnout at H. P. Holdings, an organization in
Edenvale. Symptoms and sources of burnout in the workplace, nature of engagement,
the
theoretical relationship between engagement and burnout in the workplace are going to
be reviewed according to literature. Objectives, method of investigation, sampling, data
collection and analysis as well as ethical considerations will be discussed.

environments.
Shen et al., (2015), postulate that Teacher burnout is regarded as a serious problem in
