, Q1
The Plan-and-Implement Career Model by Greenhaus et al. (2010) is a comprehensive framework that
helps individuals systematically plan and execute their career development. I'll apply this model to my
own career planning process, illustrating each step with examples from my career journey.
Step 1: Self-Assessment
In this step, individuals evaluate their interests, values, skills, and personality to identify their career-
related goals and preferences. This step serves as the foundation of career planning.
In my career journey, self-assessment played a crucial role. When I started my professional life, I had a
degree in computer science but wasn't entirely sure what specific career path I wanted to pursue.
Through self-assessment, I realized that I had a strong interest in both programming and problem-
solving. I also discovered that I valued work-life balance and job stability.
Step 2: Reality Check
In this phase, individuals gather information about the labor market, industry trends, and job
opportunities. This information helps them align their career goals with the realities of the job market.
For example, I researched the job market in the technology sector, particularly focusing on software
development roles. I examined the demand for various programming languages and technologies and
noted that certain skills were in higher demand than others. This step guided me towards specializing
in a programming language that had strong job prospects.
Step 3: Goal Setting
Once individuals have a clear understanding of their skills and the job market, they can set specific and
achievable career goals. These goals provide direction and motivation for their career journey.
I set short-term and long-term career goals based on my self-assessment and the information I
gathered. For the short-term, I aimed to gain experience through internships and entry-level positions.
My long-term goal was to become a senior software developer, specializing in a niche area within the
field.
Step 4: Action Planning
This step involves developing a concrete plan to achieve the set goals. It includes identifying
necessary education, training, networking, and job search strategies.
I created an action plan that included pursuing additional certifications in my chosen programming
language, networking with professionals in the industry through online forums and conferences, and
actively seeking job openings that aligned with my career goals. I also enrolled in online courses to
enhance my skills.
Step 5: Implementation
The implementation phase involves executing the action plan and taking practical steps toward the
established career goals. It may include job applications, further education, skill development, and
building a professional network.
During this phase, I applied for numerous job positions, attended workshops and seminars to improve
my skills, and actively engaged with industry communities. I secured an entry-level position at a tech
company, which marked a significant step toward my long-term goal.
