Subject: Fruit and vegetables- English terms for fruit and vegetables

Materials: real fruit, flash cards, pictures, worksheets



Lesson objective: Students identify various types of fruit and vegetables. Identification is
verbal and non-verbal, name pointing, drawing, and matching.

Assumptions: Students may know some of the fruits and vegetables. They might use
their own language to name fruits and vegetables, and it may not be English names.

Anticipated problems: Students may struggle to pronounce the words correctly.
Technology may not be working.

Solutions: Drill pronunciation repeatedly until all students are comfortable and confident.
Have printed versions of all activities.

Introduction:

Students will be presented with real fruit and vegetables. They will get a chance to see
and hold the various objects. The teacher will ask what the name of each object is to
establish prior knowledge amongst the students.

Presentation:

Show students a poster of various fruits and vegetables, covers the labels. Model some
basic sentences. “This fruit is called……. we use it for………..” SS repeat and debate.

Questions about the uses and where it is found can be asked Elicit: “What do we use for
vegetables do we use for a green salad?” “What fruit is long and yellow?” SS Repeat
and drill.

Purpose of procedure: To interest students and learn new vocabulary. To name and
identify various fruits and vegetables. Being able to distinguish between fruit and
vegetables.
