He is alone, surrounded by nature and its sounds, and,
Dark rider like the man on the island, is comforted. Both are
afraid of what is outside the comfort zone, and this is
(Tatamkhulu Afrika) similar in that it is “the desolate breath of the void”, a
nothing, a meaninglessness

Paragraph question SACAI JUN 2022

In your opinion, does the poet prove He has just said that the kloof is only a few minutes
in this poem that dreams/imagination from the city, and now he says but, it is nevertheless
have value? not like the city. The “but” provides the contrast
between the two.
Yes. When he imagines he is on an
island; he feels protected from the
unknown darkness around him. His
imagination allows him to escape
reality just as the kloof provides a
sanctuary away from the city. The dark
rider whom he imagines is a kind of
guardian figure which also makes him
feel safe. The dark rider provides
mysterious romantic heroism that can
take you back to your childhood, a
release from adult concerns like those
of the chaotic city. OR No. His
imagination makes him afraid as
shown when he describes his sense of
being on an island but fearful of what
is there in the unknown. All the things
he imagines, might be the dark rider,
are not real, they are just natural
things so, in the end, he is just fooling
himself. He says he has a right to his
childhood dreams, but he will still have
to return to the city.
