De wereldwijde eenwording door technologische en
communicatieve ontwikkelingen, migratie,
transnationale handel en gemeenschappelijke
financiële markten, heeft ook een grote invloed op
de aard en omvang van criminaliteit. Mondiale
variëteit in welvaart en levenskansen geeft
ondernemers een kans om zich zowel op legale als
illegale wijze te verrijken. De vraag- en aanbodzijde
van illegaliteit zijn door mondialisering
gemakkelijker te benaderen. Daarbij bieden
technologische ontwikkelingen nieuwe
mogelijkheden voor daders om zich te verhullen
voor (opsporings)autoriteiten (Aas 2007: 186).
Mensensmokkelaars en –handelaren zijn wellicht
het beste voorbeeld van „booming business‟ in de
gemondialiseerde wereld. Maar ook strafbare feiten
zoals handel in verboden drugs en wapens,
witwassen en heling zijn lucratief.
In dit essay staat het thema „witwassen‟ centraal.
Deze vorm van criminaliteit wordt geplaatst binnen
de context van mondiale ontwikkelingen en
specifiek binnen de concepten van transnationaliteit,
de veranderde rol van de natiestaat, de
„responsibilization strategy‟ en het terugtrekken van
de verzorgingsstaat. Hierbij wordt uitgelegd hoe
deze misdaad het beste onderzocht kan worden,
waarbij rekening wordt gehouden met de concepten
van „space of flows‟ en „placelessness‟.
