TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR
INCLUSIVITY
,QUESTION 1: IMPLEMENTING INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
1.1 Busisiwe is a visually impaired learner in your classroom. Explain how you
will accommodate her learning support needs to ensure that she learns as
effectively as possible.
Learner`s with visual impairments should be encouraged to use critical thinking,
argumentation and reflection during learning. Learning should be about life and relevant.
Blind learners learn mostly through their sense of hearing in a group situation. A learner
with visual impairments needs more individual attention and support. As her Teacher i
must be creative and innovative. Blind learners learn through touching objects. At the
same time the educator provides more information and answer questions. In larger
classes groupwork and cooperative learning can be used as a means of support. The
class gets divided into smaller groups. Each group should have at least one visually
impaired learner. These learners should be introduced to objects, sounds, smells, tastes
by means of excursions, models and everyday apparatus. Props such as blocks, rods,
models, stuffed animals, embossed maps are important to use in formal teaching.
I will also teach the learner to use as much as possible their other senses such as
hearing, touching, forms of temperature and smell. This learner should be supported to
make discoveries on their own and not be overly protected as they will not become
independent individuals. These learners require constant motivation and praise to
complete tasks. They need to be motivated to learn and accept responsibility. Low-vision
learners are sight readers and are dependent on large print for reading. When large print
books are not available a magnifying glass can be used. Closed-circuit television is
helpful in the classroom when a teacher does demonstrations underneath a camera while
low-vision learners can follow the large images on a television screen. Digital books are
available on tablets.
