1.1. Discuss how ICT integration can transform teaching and learning in the
context of South Africa

The implementation of ICTs in South African schools are targeted at providing quality
education to all. Integrating technology in learning encourages collaboration –
students can practice collaboration skills by getting involve in different online activities
for instance, working in different projects and sharing documents on their virtual
learning environments. Technology can enhance relationship between teachers and
learners, when teachers effectively integrate technology into subject area, teachers
grow into roles of advisers, content expert and coach. Technology helps making
teaching and learning more meaningful and fun. Technology keeps learners engaged-
the student of this generation is considered technological learners therefore it is
important to integrate technology in classroom because they learn best being more
interactive and technology is what helps them do to that. With technology there are no
limitations – having access to other information outside the books gives many students
different ways it learns a concept and teachers can come up with creative ways to
teach their students that keeps them engaged. Technology can help improving
teaching for teachers, they can use different application or online resources to
enhance the traditionally ways of teaching and keep students more engaged.




1.2. Explain FIVE (5) challenges that hindered the successful implementation of
ICT in Gauteng Schools.

Lack of training opportunity – teachers are not provided with enough training and
proper technical support and so many roles to play it results in shortage of time to
practice new technology being transformed.
Fear of technology – educators have this fear of the unknowns with new
technologies, they also scared to experiment with new technologies.
Lack of hardware and guidance to use them – schools are not sure as to what type
of computers and other technologies to use.
Resistance to change – teachers are comfortable and used to the traditional

methods of teaching and hence resist changing and getting out of their comfort
zones.
Inability to allow student to know more than the teacher – teachers are afraid of the
potential technology holds and the power of knowledge students can get with it. This
attitudes that kids many know more than me makes educators insecure and backs
them up.
1.3. In your opinion, what are possible reasons why the integration of ICT in
Kelapile secondary school is not successful?
1. Lack of technology in the school:
Internet connectivity is available, but not reliable & Out of 1 000 learner. Only thirty
tablets have been provided to Grade 12 Mathematics learners.
2. Lack of time:
The available ICT tools are only used occasionally. The teachers make little use of
the ICT tools because they probably do not have enough time. Researchers
identified time limitations and the difficulty in scheduling enough time for classes as a
barrier to teachers’ use of ICT in their teaching.
3. Lack of technical support:
Some of the tablets are not operational. Without both good technical support in the
classroom and whole-school resources, teachers cannot be expected to overcome
the barriers preventing them from using ICT.
4. No technology coordinator in the school:
There is not an ICT coordinator or an overseeing ICT committee at the school.
5. Resistance to change:
Easy way out is to keep the status quo. The principal and school management team
(SMT) are not ICT users.


1.4. What do you think could be the best ways for ICT implementation in
schools? Explain at least FIVE (5) ways
1. Technology vision:
The principal/school should develop a vision of how technology can support
teaching, learning and administration in the school, and this vision should be shared
with all stakeholders
2. Technology plan:
The school should develop a technology plan for implementation in the immediate
future to meet the needs, including a budget to finance it.
