QUESTION 1
1.1. Analyse the failure by the supervisor to act on the incompetence of
Tendani. Use the Kantian duty and utilitarianism theories in your
analysis.
Utilitarianism theory is about the greatest good for the greatest number of people, it
looks at the consequences of all those affected by an action long/short term. It is not
egoistic, it values all equally (Dodd, Brewster & Holland, 2021:173). It is consequentialist
in nature as it considers the outcomes of ethical decisions.
− Utilitarianism is about the about the greatest good for the greatest number of
people, however Tendani’s behavior made the employees under the customer
services unit not to be happy under his leadership, which is something that is
contrary to the principle.
− The action that Tendani’ immediate supervisor took of only giving Tendani a verbal
, 2 warning is contrary to the utilitarianism principle that all must be valued equally.
− Moreover, the act of the immediate supervisor of standing up for Tendani and
failing to fire him is inconsistent with the utilitarianism principle of avoiding egoism.
− The act of the interview committee of failing to see that this Tendani would not be
able to perform, was all due to ignorance and favoritism which goes against the
principle of utilitarianism.
Kantian duty theory is about respecting autonomous beings, it protect individuals from
being used as a means to an end, it is consistent with the golden rule ‘do unto others as
you would have them do unto you’, It stresses the importance of an individual duty
towards others, rather than consequences. It challenges management to treat everyone
stakeholder with respect and integrity rather than viewing them instrumentally for the
collective good (Dodd, Brewster & Holland, 2021:174).
− The employees under the customer services unit were not happy to be under
Tendani’s leadership, but the immediate supervisor ignored this, which something
that goes against the principle.
− There was a call from both the unit he led and other managers for Tendani to be
fired, but his immediate supervisor was adamant, the supervisor showed that he
has not respect for other people.
1.2. Evaluate the leadership of the immediate supervisor in terms of how
he handled Tendani’s case.
The leadership of the immediate supervisor is somehow biased, based on following
points:
− After Tendani submitted poorly written reports to his immediate supervisor long
after the due date, Tendani’ immediate supervisor only gave Tendani a verbal
