10. Assume there is a real life banking process that offers home loans to
clients. The bank uses an algorithm which requires a client’s sensitive
information in order to perform an ‘affordability test’ to see whether
they are able to pay back the sum that they will loan. Discuss what kind
of problems could arise if this algorithm was outsourced to an external
contractor and the bank would have to connect to the contractor’s
private laptop every time to use it [10 marks]
Answer:
There are obvious security problems in play here. The bank is sending client’s private information to an
outsourced entity over a connection that may not be secure. Even if their outsourced contractor is
bound by a strict confidentiality contract, if there is an information leak it will be a disaster.

• Mutual Understanding - the contractor is regulated by non-disclosure agreements. The
contractors may be aware that the information sent to them is important, but may not
take the necessary precautions needed to stop a data leak.
• Communication – it is unknown how the data is being transferred to this contractor’s
computer. The security of this data transfer needs to be confirmed or it could result in a
data leak.
• Geographical Distance – it is unknown where this contractor lives but it could pose
performance issues if he/she lives far estranged from the business. The speed of the
contractor’s internet connection can also pose issues.
