ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS:
1. The Covid-19 pandemic great affected all industries in the world and the
aviation industry was no exception. With that said, discuss the impact of COVID-
19 on the low-cost carriers in the world and South Africa. Your response should
start with a presentation of the pandemic’s impact in the world with reference to
the LCC (low‐cost carriers), then to South Africa with practical examples in both
instances.
The COVID-19 pandemic affected the whole world, including the road transport
industry. This includes airlines that offer low-cost flights, known as Low-Cost Carriers
(LCCs). Because of the pandemic, there were many new and difficult problems.
Countries had to close down, stop people from traveling, and make rules to keep
people apart. This made fewer people want to fly in planes. LCCs, which usually offer
cheap and simple flights, had a tough time because most of their customers are people
who want to travel for fun or who want to spend less money.
Because fewer people wanted to fly, there were fewer passengers on planes. So,
many LCCs had to stop using some of their planes and fly less often. Some airlines
had money problems and had to change the way they operated to stay in business.
This sudden change meant they lost a lot of money and had more financial problems.
The pandemic made it hard to know when things would get better. Rules about travel,
like when people had to stay home or when they could go out, kept changing. This
uncertainty made it tough for LCCs to plan how to get better. They also had to deal
with new problems, like different rules in different places and people not feeling
confident about traveling.
To survive during this tough time, LCCs had to change how they did things. They tried
to save money by spending less, made new deals with others, and tried to find other
ways to make money, like carrying cargo or doing special flights. They also had to
make sure people felt safe when they flew, following new rules about health and
safety.
