,IOP3705 Assignment 4 Semester 2 2023
Unique Numner: 674432
DUE DATE: 10 November 2023
Stay-a-While Rentals started as a small business that administered holiday accommodation on
behalf of its owners. The administration also entails cleaning and maintenance of the
properties. The company is administrating the rental of 40 houses and a couple of
townhouses.
Joe, the founder and director of the company, also considers the administration of a building of
flats. Joe head-hunted John, who oversaw a garden services business in several suburbs.
John brought 20 employees, a few pick-up trucks and garden tools.
Unfortunately, the pick-ups were, as a result of financial constraints, not serviced. Some
garden tools also needed to be replaced. The management team consists of Joe, Patrick, a
business partner and director; the HR manager Joan; Stephany, the financial manager; and
John, the maintenance manager. John is also responsible for the gardens. Currently, the
position of IT manager is vacant. Josephine, Joe’s wife, is assisting with capturing the data on
the IT system.

, As an organisation development consultant, James received a phone call from Patrick
requesting him to quote for a team-building intervention for their management team.
Patrick told him confidentially that there were many conflicts among team members. The
conflict negatively impacts the performance and profitability of the company.
He suspects it is due to Josephine’s “bossiness” and how she deals with the customers. He
told James that their clients complain about the slow service and that their invoices are often
incorrect. Some angry clients even threaten to use other service providers if the quality of their
service does not improve.
Due to the urgency of the request, James was contracted and embarked on a team-building
session to deal with the underlying conflict.
During the session, the conflict exploded, and members accused each other of a lack of
cooperation. Josephine complained that the IT system could not handle the load, especially
since John joined the company.
She then withdrew and left the session, saying she never gets listened to. John complained
that he did not get the support as expected, his trucks need service, and he finds it
challenging to keep up with all the requests for adding new clients to his garden service.
He also mentioned that his employees complain as they used to do things differently before
they joined Stay-a-While. They don’t get overtime pay, and they don’t experience a sense of
belonging.
Stephany told Joe they failed to budget for truck services and new lawnmowers. After calming
John, Joe said that his vision for the company is not to increase the garden services.
As the garden services are too expensive, they should instead focus on expanding the
administration of the houses and only do garden services to attract new clients for rental
purposes. He further mentioned that there are more opportunities to make money with rentals,
primarily if they can administer holiday flats, as flats have few gardens.
Joe also said he did not have time to discuss his vision for the company yet, but he believes
that John’s clients could also be a target for renting their properties. He then told John to tell
his gardeners they must decide whether they want to work for this company.
After the session, James was paid but has yet to receive feedback from Patrick on the
success of the intervention.
James believed that the time was too short but that they at least solved some of the conflicts
by having the opportunity to speak their minds. However, he later read in the local newspaper
that John had started a new maintenance company.
