ADMIN
[COMPANY NAME]

, CASE STUDY Martin is a senior manager of a large software engineering
company where he had worked himself up during his tenure over the last
fifteen years. He was recently promoted to his current position, due to his
innovative ideas. These resulted in excellent financial performance, for which
he got most of the credit. Martin is very loyal to the company but is also well-
known in the industry for several business acquisitions he was involved in. He
is self-confident, has a very strong vision and sees himself as the future
managing director of the company. He is also known as a manager who does
not tolerate opposition and often outsmarts his opponents in the business
world. The Board of Directors think very highly of Martin. They can always
count on him to set the example for what can be accomplished, and, with his
personality, he meets any sort of demand that the company places on him.
However, even though some of his followers like him and view him as their
hero, others blame him for using his power for his gain, that he is too
concerned about pleasing top management and not nearly concerned enough
with the needs and concerns of those who challenge his decisions. Relative to
employees in other departments doing similar jobs, most of his staff feel
underpaid and overworked. They also experience that they are not in control
as they are restricted in making decisions about their work. They are uncertain
about the future direction of the company, and they don’t feel as if they belong
to the company anymore. They also complain they cannot rely on his support.
Consequently, there is considerable conflict in the department, but as
colleagues don’t want to talk about their frustrations with Martin, they start
blaming each other. They experience the work environment as very stressful,
and some threaten to resign or consider asking for a transfer to another
department. The performance of the department has begun to suffer because
of his style and leadership. Top management seems to be oblivious to the
situation. QUESTIONS 1. Critically discuss the modern leadership theory that
Martin most probably applies in terms of its possible strengths and
shortcomings and explain what advice you would give Martin.
