,INTRODUCTION
Welcome!

Dear student, we would like to extend a sincere welcome to you. Our intention with this
module, Mathematics for Intermediate Phase Teachers II, code MIP2602, is to guide you
to understand the concepts and processes involved in data handling.

The purpose of this module is to enable you to develop an understanding of the concepts
and terminology used in data and statistics, the data cycle, the various forms of recording
and representing data, as well as concepts in probability. The content of this module is
another powerful link between mathematics as an academic discipline and everyday life
and situations.

The formal study of data handling and probability retains its importance in the Senior
Phase. However, its positioning in the CAPS document near the end of a term or a year
has resulted in a very unfortunate situation where teachers often spend minimal time on
the topics in this content area, and traditionally the least of all on the topic of probability.
Modern-day careers almost all include an aspect of data handling and learners who
master the concepts have an edge in the job market already.

As is our point of departure in all the Mathematics modules for the Intermediate Phase,
we are providing a broader and deeper perspective of the content area than what is
strictly required of the learner to know according to the CAPS document.

Structure of the module
This module is divided into five learning units. The units cover the concepts used in data
and probability, the data cycle, the representational forms of data, the application of
these concepts to life contexts, the processing of data according to a data cycle and the
integration of technology in learning and teaching data handling. Although the units can
be studied separately, they should be read together to provide comprehensive guidance
in understanding the concepts.

Specific topics and sub-topics of this module
The topics and sub-topics below will form part of the syllabus that is covered in this
module. Note that topics correspond with the specific outcomes and sub-topics with the
assessment criteria as they appear at the beginning of each unit.

Learning unit 1

To develop detailed knowledge and understanding of data handling and probability.
• Demonstrate an integrated knowledge of data handling.
• Demonstrate an integrated knowledge of probability.

2

, Learning unit 2
To identify and explain statistical concepts in the Intermediate Phase.
• Display and formulate assumptions about real-life situations.
• Use appropriate statistical tools to collect data in order to represent, analyse and
interpret the information gathered.
• Draw conclusions about the data represented, analysed and interpreted.
• Interpret measures of central tendency and dispersion applicable to the data.

Learning unit 3
To engage in critical analysis of the data collection and analysing processes.
• Critically discuss data collection, representations and interpretation of data.
• Defend arguments about inferences made about collected data.
• Make valid judgements about interpreted data.

Learning unit 4
To discuss and analyse the applications of probability in real-world situations.
• Display an understanding of probability concepts.
• Explain and distinguish between dependent and independent probability.
• Draw a probability tree diagram in order to represent independent events.
• Apply information appropriate to independent and combined events.

Learning unit 5
To integrate technology in teaching and learning of statistics and probability concepts.
• Use technological tools, such as computers, tablets and virtual manipulative software.
• Use software such as MS Math Add-In, Excel and GeoGebra in learning statistics.
• Demonstrate an understanding of how calculators contribute to the learning of
statistics through numeric calculations, for example mean and standard deviation.
• Use Microsoft Excel tools to organise, analyse, display and summarise data.
• Gather and select digital content appropriate to achieving in-depth understanding of
statistics and probability.
• Use the appropriate technology for practical demonstration and presentation of data
and results.

We hope the module will empower you to teach this crucial part of Mathematics successfully.
Concepts and techniques are explained in such a way that, while you are working through
the content, you are also given the opportunity to apply the concepts. This means you will
not only know WHAT to teach, but also HOW to explain, by doing the work practically.
As you progress through the study guide, you will gain more knowledge and confidence
in teaching a neglected (and sometimes feared) content area in Mathematics.
