QUESTION 2
The essay explores the theory an Afro-centric perspective. The postmodern
perspective and postcolonial perspective will be briefly discussed. Furthermore,
ubuntu will be discussed as a normative theory as well as First World socialism. The
postmodern perspective is a break from modernisation, it gained prominence in in
the 1950’s and 1960’s. It rejects the idea that individual consciousness and reason
are important in determining the shaping of human history. It is an approach that tries
to explain how societies progressed after modern times.
On the other hand, postcolonial perspective is a political perspective produced by
colonial powers and works that were produced by those who were colonized. It
focuses on literature and politics.
Ubuntu moves past the importance of the individual and individual rights, and
highlights sharing on individual participation in a collective life (Fourie 2018:211).
Ubuntu is humanity, how well people treat each other. When people help each other,
they live well in harmony, there would be less fights if people used Ubuntu in their
daily lives. A simple act of kindness is Ubuntu.
Individual rights are very important because as much as people live in collectives,
they are different individuals and have their own individual needs. As much as
collective rights cater for masses, rights that are for individuals eliminate the option
to have no choice but to go with the flow. Rights such as the right to education are
for a collective, but cater for each individual, meaning, every individual has the right
to education, but the right is available to all as a collective and not only to group of
people.
Freedom of expression enables people to be heard and voice out concerns instead
of being bullied to accept rules made by others. And enables people to be able to
express themselves when they want to communicate issues. When a community is
not happy with the service they receive from the national or local government they
are within their rights to express their grievances to the government and have a
dialog on how to address those issues. Instead of keeping quiet and accepting what
they consider to be unacceptable service.
Journalism and media play a major role as a communication tool in the society, it
helps the society informed on issues surrounding them and issues around the world
that affect them directly or indirectly. Journalists use the media to report their
findings, and state leaders use media to communicate with the people. Ubuntu builds
communities, people help each other, and media serves as a tool to give out
information of people who give and need help.
