, Analysis of the poem
1. daar’s ‘n buffel in die The first line (eerste reël) is
badkamer, almost (amper) a replica
(a) (replika) of the title of the
poem, hence (dus) reiterating
what the poem is going to be
about (waaroor die gedig
gaan handel).
Effective (effektiewe) use
(gebruik) of the “d” and “b”
alliteration (alliterasie) as these
are called “eksplosiewe” in
Afrikaans, which echoes
(eggo) the idea of what
people perceive (beskou) a
buffalo to be: an aggressive
(aggresiewe), unpredictable
(onvoorspelbare) animal. Yet
(tog), in this poem, one gets
the feeling (gevoel) that this
buffalo is the opposite
(teenoorgestelde) of that
perception (beskouing).
2. daar’s ‘n buffel in die bad. There is progression
(b) (progressie) in this line (reël) as
it has now been narrowed
down (fokus vernou) from the
bathroom to the specific
place where the buffalo can
be found, namely (naamlik)
the bathtub (bad).
Anaphora (anafora) is the
repetition (herhaling) of a
phrase (frase) and this
technique (tegniek) can be
seen with the repetition of
“daar’s ‘n buffel in die”
3. genadetjie, kom help tog - “genadetjie” is an interjection
(c) (tussenwerpsel) which the
speaker uses (gebruik) to
emphasize (beklemtoon) his
plea (pleidooi) for help.
“o” assonance (assonansie)
