Leadership
Slide 6
Leadership includes:
Leading teams, departments, groups.
Translating organizational strategies and vision to team and individual level.
Leadership happens on different levels & it has a connecting role between team and individual level.
Slide 9
Example definitions of leaderships:
The ability to impress the will of the leader on those led and induce obedience, respect, loyalty, and
cooperation. (Moor, 1927)
A process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.
(Northouse)
Slide 10 + 11
Leadership and power
Positional vs Personal power / Assigned vs Emergent leadership
Formal vs Informal leaders
Power = the capacity or potential to influence.
Authority = legitimized power; those who are subordinate to this leader, respect his/her views.
These leaders don’t have to punish or reward, because they already have authority.
Slide 12
Management vs. Leadership Is there a difference?
Management is about: planning, budgeting, organizing, controlling and problem-solving.
Leadership is more about: guiding, getting people committed, motivate and inspire.
So a manager doesn’t have to be a leader, and a leader doesn’t have to be a manager.
