, Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)
The student is a Spanish male at a B1 intermediate level. He is currently working and would
like to either progress at his current company or find a job in England. The student will need
to be able to read, write, listen and speak English well in order to communicate well in the
workplace and progress. He has also indicated that pronunciation is of importance. I have
therefore chosen a multi syllabus in order to cover various areas.
The first lesson will focus on writing. The student has indicated that writing is his strength
so I have started with this skills lesson because it will be a good ice breaker that will leave
the student feeling confident and positive. I have chosen emails to teach this skill since
emails are used widely in the workplace and the student wants to progress in his career. I
will go through several sample emails to give the student a better understanding. The topic
chosen here is business because the student indicated his desire to progress in the
workplace.
The second lesson will be on listening. The video chosen will appeal to the student because
it is based on the environment. At the end of the lesson he will have a better understanding
of listening for gist and listening for specific detail.
Lesson three is on speaking and pronunciation. The student would like to travel and be able
to have conversations in English. I have chosen not to use any materials in this lesson as the
focus is on speaking. There will be constant dialogue in this lesson giving the student the
opportunity to speak.
Lesson four is based on the reading skill. The student has an interest in science and
technology so he will find this appealing. The lesson will begin with a short video that will
peak the interest of the student. The activities in this lesson will lead the student to read
for gist and to read for specific detail. The student will share his opinions at the end which
will allow him to also practice speaking.
Lesson five is a grammar lesson on phrasal verbs. The student is currently at the B1
intermediate level so a focus on phrasal verbs is useful. The activities in this lesson will
appeal to the student, who enjoys games.
Due to this being one on one lessons there is a bit of a restriction with games that can be
played however, some of this has been added in to appeal to the student. The student
would also like funny activities so I will add humour to the activities that have been set out
to ensure that I am able to keep the student interested.
The student has indicated that the topics he would like included are environment, science,
technology and current affairs. I have included all of these topics to ensure that the student
remains interested throughout the lesson. The lessons will be interactive with a minimal
amount of time spent with the student working alone on worksheets etc. With the lessons
being interactive it will allow the student more time to practice speaking. The benefit of
interactive lessons is that I will also be able to offer more guidance to the student in areas
that I feel he requires more attention.
