1 INTRODUCTION
“It is better to die for an idea that will live, than to live for an idea that will die”- Biko.
Welcome to PLC3701, Political Ideas! Thank you for your enrolment for the module.
We trust that you will find this module interesting and stimulating. We hope that you will be
successful in your academic endeavours and will continue studying in this Department by
selecting other modules that we offer. This module is offered in a blended mode. Blended
learning refers to the use of a variety of technologies, pedagogies, contexts and delivery modes
(such as online learning) to create a strategic mix that will increase student success (Prinsloo
etal, 2007). Online learning environments form a crucial part of any blended learning strategy.
For more information on what constitutes blended learning, kindly consult Section 9.4 below
regarding what constitutes blended learning.
Please take special note of the contents of this tutorial letter as well as your copy of the
brochure Study @ Unisa (go to www.unisa.ac.za/brochures/studies) for information concerning
your studies. This tutorial letter provides information on:
Study material for this module;
assignments (formative assessment);
examinations (summative assessment) and;
general matters such as contact with the University.
Read this tutorial letter thoroughly because it will direct you towards the most relevant and
important parts of the module. This will save you time and effort when you are reading,
preparing for assignments and examinations.
The Department offers modules on a semester basis. This implies that there are two periods of
tuition as well as two sets of examinations during each calendar year. The first period runs from
approximately February to May and the second period from approximately July to October. This
tutorial letter contains information for both semesters. Therefore, you have to ensure that you
follow the instructions relevant to the semester for which you have registered. Also, note
that there are different sets of assignments for each semester. You must do the
assignments for the semester in which you are registered for this module. The
examinations follow each period of study. Please note that aegrotat and supplementary
examinations will coincide with the examinations of the following semester.
Note! You may enrol at the beginning of the year for modules offered in the second semester.
This will enable you to study for these modules over a longer period.
