Make a judgement with regards to the absorptive capacity of Netcare. In your answer, you need to
explain the meaning of absorptive capacity and apply the dimensions thereof to Netcare’s systems
and processes. (10 marks, of which 2 marks will be awarded to the explanation of absorptive
capacity, and 8 marks to the application of the dimensions thereof to Netcare’s systems and
processes. PLEASE NOTE, you need to
explain each dimension first and then apply it to
Netcare.
Absorptive capacity can be defined as an organization's proficiency in recognizing, incorporating,
modifying, and utilizing external knowledge, research, and practices. In simpler terms, it gauges
how quickly an organization can learn and leverage scientific, technological, or other external
knowledge beyond its own boundaries. Zahra & George (2002) delineated four facets of
absorptive capacity, namely acquisition, assimilation, transformation, and exploitation.
Acquisition, which involves recognizing and understanding the significance of external knowledge
essential for organizational operations, serves as a knowledge generator. For instance, Netcare
showcases a robust acquisition capability by consistently investing in cutting-edge medical
technologies and high-level professional expertise. They actively pursue and invest in expanding
their capabilities to stay abreast of developments in the healthcare industry.
Assimilation pertains to a firm's ability to integrate external knowledge using routines and
processes that facilitate understanding, analyzing, processing, and interpreting information from
external sources. Netcare demonstrates assimilation through its comprehensive range of private
healthcare services, successfully integrating various healthcare services to provide holistic
healthcare solutions.
Transformation represents a firm's capacity to refine routines facilitating the amalgamation of
existing knowledge with newly acquired and assimilated knowledge. Netcare exemplifies
knowledge transformation through a strategy that delivers seamless and integrated services,
moving away from traditional siloed approaches by leveraging digitization and rich data for a
differentiated care offering.
The true advantage of absorptive capacity emerges when organizations apply transformed
knowledge and insights to enhance their operations, innovate, and venture into new business
areas. Netcare illustrates this by focusing on consistent and excellent patient care, applying new
knowledge through a commitment to quality healthcare, inspiring their workforce, encouraging
innovation, and optimizing operations to deliver value for all stakeholders. Their continuous
investments in people, infrastructure, and technology reflect their commitment to applying new
knowledge to enhance healthcare services.
