Semester 1
, QUESTION 1
(a) Ethics according to the oxford dictionary means that moral principles of people are
govern a person's behaviour. Put this in perspective, the environment needs to be
protected and so people's behaviour towards the environment also has to be studied
and so this leads us to writers or philosophers coming up with ways or approaches to
deal with the relationship between the environment and individuals. One approach is
the anthropocentrism. Glazewski describes it also as a human centred
environmental ethic. This approach holds that people's moral duties regarding nature
or the environment are determined by duties we owe to one another as living beings.
This human centeredness is based on the Christian view that people should
according to the bible rule over living creatures be it in the air or the land or in the
water. There's an argument about this assertion." 1
This approach further allows humans to act however they want towards nature
provided they are serving human nature. The legal system has an anthropocentric
bias, particularly in the legal norms that underpin growing environmental law norms.
There is a Roman law principle that states, "you may use your property in a way that
will not injure another," which is a cornerstone of our law of neighbours, and this does
not imply that exercising due care is for the intrinsic good of the environment. This
resonates well with the principle of inter-generational equity as seen reflected in the
constitutional mantra "present and future generations", which is clear reflection of an
anthropocentric philosophy protecting the environment for future unborn human
beings. In our legislation the Anthropocentric approach is also reflected in section 2
of the NEMA act where it provides that “environmental management must place
people and their needs at the forefront of its concern and serve their physical,
psychological, developmental, cultural and social interests equitably.
(b) Biocentrism is also referred to as a life centred approach. It asserts that the rights and
needs of humans are not more important than other living things. It also views that
animals are also important just as plants and other living beings. Glazewski further
went on to assert that people’s duties as human beings towards nature do not stem
from duties to our fellow human beings, but they are independent. Therefore, as
