NounsWe call the names of most of the things around us, nouns.
Common nouns are the names of most of the things around us: boy, table, desk, chair, pencil.
Proper nouns are the special names of people (John, Mary), places (Durban, Pretoria), days
(Wednesday, Saturday), and months (February, March). Proper nouns start with capital letters.
Countable and uncountable nouns
Countable nouns: things that we can count. You can ask the question: How many? Desks,
chairs, children, boys, girls, pencils, eggs, animals. How many children are there in the class?
Uncountable nouns: things we can’t count. You can ask: How much? Rain, sand, milk, butter,
jam, money. How much money do you have in your wallet?
Verbs
Verbs are doing words or action words.
My dad drives a Ferrari.
My mom bought groceries at Spar.
Adjectives
Adjectives are describing words. They describe nouns and give us information about a person,
place, or thing: an old lady, a red car, a beautiful garden.
Adjectives tell us how people look, how things feel, sound or taste.
Articles
Articles are the words a, an, the. It is usually used before a noun or adjective.
The man eats a juice orange.
