Agenda Item 3.5: Drug abuse issues and student support

The meeting commenced with the Chairperson, Mr Dube, highlighting the prevalent issue
of drug addiction at the university and the surrounding communities, causing poor
performance, high drop-out rates, and gangsterism in neighbouring schools. The
committee invited Ms Botha, owner of a local drug rehabilitation center, to share
information about the impact of drug abuse and the services provided by the center.

Ms Botha, a former drug addict, described her rehabilitation center's efforts to assist
addicts aged 13 to 68 years, offering free 14 or 21-day stays with the possibility of
extended treatment for severe cases. The center is staffed by volunteers, doctors, and
social workers who provide their services free of charge.

Following Ms Botha's presentation, Ms Oriel from SRC shared stories of university
students struggling with addiction, emphasizing the urgency of providing support. Mr
Dube proposed collaborating with Botha Recovery Centre through awareness
campaigns, volunteering, and fundraising. Ms Moot from Student Support Department
proposed holding seminars on drug abuse and inviting relevant departments to engage
with the students.

Ms Cele, also from SRC, suggested including seminars in the annual itinerary and
engaging with high school students and parents to raise awareness. Mr May expressed
the SRC's commitment to engaging with high school students and volunteering at the
rehabilitation center. Ms Kubai supported the idea of student volunteering at the center
and Mr Dube concluded the discussion by suggesting fundraising to support the
expansion of the rehabilitation center.

The meeting ended with unanimous agreement and anticipation for the next meeting.
