ASSIGNMENT 03: The
novel
STUDENT NO:

, ASSIGNMENT 03: The novel

Section A: Reflective essay: Novel (Unit 4)

In 300 – 400 words reflect on Unit 4 of your study guide and

1. Yes, I have read many novels across different genres. Some of the types of
novels I have read include mystery novels, romance novels, historical fiction, and
fantasy novels. One South African novel I have read is "Disgrace" by J.M. Coetzee.
"Small Things" does have some similarities with "Disgrace," such as both novels
addressing complex and difficult social issues, and both novels featuring flawed and
complex characters.

2. In Unit 4, I found the sections on character development and setting to be the
clearest to me. The discussions about how the author creates and develops
characters, as well as how the setting of a novel can impact the story, were very
illuminating. However, I struggled with understanding the various literary techniques
and devices used in novels. It was sometimes challenging for me to identify and
analyze these elements in the text.

3. I found the prescribed novel, "Small Things," to be very interesting. The story was
engaging, and I appreciated the author's writing style and use of imagery. It was
relatively easy for me to read, and I found myself drawn into the narrative and the
lives of the characters. The novel also gave me a deeper understanding of how
South African authors explore themes of identity, race, and social issues in their
work.

Overall, Unit 4 has helped me to appreciate novels in a new way. I have gained a
better understanding of the elements that make up a novel, and I can now analyze
and appreciate the techniques and devices used by authors to create compelling and
meaningful stories. This unit has broadened my perspective on novels and has
deepened my appreciation for the craft of storytelling.
