Livy writes on the abduction of the women and
how they intervened in the war between their
fathers and their husbands

cloak), we can assume that is Romulus
because in the narrative it says that Romulus had a cloak on and with the signal of the
cloak that was the signal, he gave to the roman men to abduct the women
o Young Roman men abduct these women
In book 9 of Livy’s founding of Rome
o Livy narrates and abduction which occurred in the early history of Rome and this was
shorty after its founding
o The early population of Rome was predominantly male bandits and runways from
Italy and in this way the population grew steadily but it was a very young population
of bandits
o This growing tribe lacked females, Romulus accepted everyone but females were still
these pure chaste women so they stayed at home but this growing tribe did not attract
many females and Romulus became worried about sustain this population because
without females Rome would have only lasted for one generation
o Romulus set out to neighbouring tribe in order to negotiate marriage alliances with
them and all of the fathers of these neighbouring tribes refused but in particular the
fathers of the Sabine women refused an alliance of the basis of not wanting their pure
and chaste daughters to marry the riff raff of Italy
o Romulus became upset at this statement because the Sabine fathers thought that their
daughters were much higher in class and status compared to the Romans
o In response he devised a plan around holding a feast in honour of the God Consulia
(another name for the god of Neptune)
o The Sabine families could not resist and invitation to this feast, feast days were really
popular as there was lots of food and games
o We also learn from Livy that the Sabines came out of curiosity to see the fortification
of this newly established Roman tribes
It was a young tribe full of men (noblemen)
They wanted to expand their territory so perhaps the neighbouring tribes did
not want to intermarry because they didn’t want to see the power of Rome
grow already from an early stage
o After everyone had arrived and whilst the Sabines had their attention fixed at the feast
Romulus gave the signal (waving of cloak) and Roman men snatched/abducted young
Sabine girls and in particular the virgin maidens
