Question 1

1. Name any eight ways to support learners whose home language is not the language of
teaching and learning (LOTL) (8)
Learners whose home language is not the language of teaching and learning can be
supported by allowing them the opportunity to take notes and make summaries in their
home language. They can form groups and compare their notes to other learners. Learners
can also be given the opportunity to speak and interact in the language of teaching and
learning and engage with the learning material. Learners should be given vocabulary lists to
help them and educators (who have a high level of language profciency) should use
synonyms and illustratons to help with explanatons. Teachers need to keep an eye open for
confusion and make sure the learners understand the content being taught. Learners can
also be given the opportunity to respond to questons in diierent ways, such as illustratng
their answers for clarity or responding verbally instead of in writen formats.
2. Below is a list of categories of learning barriers. Give one example of each and suggest
how each barrier can be addresses
a. Pedagogic
Unfair assessment practces are pedagogic barriers. This can be overcome by
ensuring that assessments are fair, and that learners with medical and other barriers
are provided for. The assessments should be valid.
b. Medical
Auditory impairments can be medical barriers. Teachers can use the oral-deaf
approach or use sign language to communicate with the learner to help them learn.
Teachers can also provide the learner with typed notes (taken from tape recordings)
of the lesson.
c. Societal
Societal barriers include extreme poverty. Teachers should address this barrier by
helping these learners with study skills, reading skills and helping them understand
why the learnt material is useful and how to apply it.
d. System (4 x 3 = 12)
A lack of mother tongue speakers as teachers is a systemic barrier. This can be
overcome by supportng learners by allowing them to learn from each other and
make notes in their home language which they compare with each other.

Question 2

1. Define multiple intelligences (6))
Gardner identfed 8 unique intelligences which he claimed that each person had to diiering
degrees. Intelligence is the ability to use knowledge and skills acquired through informal
learning and study in diierent situatons, adapt to novel situatons and challenges, and
employ problem solving and critcal thinking. Gardner said we can develop our diierent
intelligences though diierent people tend to favour one or some. These include
interpersonal, intrapersonal and musical intelligences. There are also mathematcalllogical,
spatal, verballlinguistc, auditory and kinaesthetc (body).
