GEOGRAPHY

GRADE 11

TERM 1
Previous exam papers have been used to compile these notes. SACAI NOV 2019 – 2021
& EC/NOVEMBER 2022. SACAI JUN 2021 & Gr 10 SACAI NOV 2029 (Cullinan question)

These are suggested answers from the memorandum. Some information is repeated, I
want to show you the different ways the same information is asked.

I encourage you to answer the calculation/illustration questions without even looking at
the answers.

Good luck. Juffrou Ansie
Pressure The amount of change in atmospheric pressure between high and low pressure
gradient areas.
Spring equinox Occurs on September 23, resulting in day and night of equal length.
Geostrophic A wind that would result from an exact balance between Coriolis force and the
flow pressure gradient force.
West winds A wind that blows from the subtropical high pressure belt to the subpolar low
pressure belt.
Ferrel's Law The law that states that winds in the southern hemisphere are deflected to the
left and to the right in the northern hemisphere.
Summer Occurs on December 21st resulting in long days and short nights.
solstice
Tropical A wind that blows from the subtropical regions to the equator.
easterly winds
Atmospheric The weight of the atmosphere on the surface of the earth.

Föhn wind A warm, dry wind that descends on the side of a mountain - a similar wind in
South Africa is the Bergwind.
SYNOPTIC On synoptic weather maps, the isobars indicate high pressure where they are
MAP closer together
Isobars indicate low pressure where they are far apart Geostrophic flow means
the relationship between the atmospheric pressure and wind. High pressure,
high wind speed, low pressure less wind speed.
EL NINO The EL NINO is characterized by warmer temperatures in the central and
eastern Pacific.
El Nino is associated with warmer and drier conditions in parts of Africa.

LA NINA La Nina is characterized by cooler temperatures in the central and eastern
Pacific.
La Nina is associated with cooler and wetter conditions in parts of Africa.
Summer A low pressure cell forms over the warm land surfaces leading to rising warm air
monsoons in the summer

Winter Cold winter temperatures and descending air create strong high pressure over
monsoons the continental interior

TOPIC 1: GEOGRAPHIC SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES (MAPWORK):

1. Winds (SACAI JUN 2021)

@ Teacher _ Ansie

, 3

The wet adiabatic lapse
rate is 0.5 °C per 100
metres on the windward
side of the mountain.

1.1 Natural disasters that can occur due to the hot, dry wind of the Föhn.

• Droughts
• Wildfires
• Snowfalls
• Flooding

1.2 The reason why precipitation occurs on the windward side of the mountain.

Moist air rises on windward slope and air cools where condensation takes place.

1.3 The reason why föhn winds cause a rise in temperature on the leeward side of the
mountain.

As the air descends on the leeward side of the mountain, it warms rapidly at the DALR because now
there is very little moisture in the air.

1.4 Föhn winds often cause serious natural disasters such as veld fires, droughts and melting of
snow. In a paragraph of approximately eight lines. Precautions that people can take when a föhn
wind occurs.

• Fire fighters / Emergency services must be on standby to detect / attend to veld fires.
• Inhabitants should have fire extinguishers in their houses.
• Prepare firebreaks.
• Construct lookout towers.
• Earlier warning (TV, radio, newspapers) provides time for inhabitants to secure liquids in
preparation for dehydration to humans due to the increased temperatures.
• Farmers must fill watering points to ensure hydration of livestock.
