QUESTION 1 [60 marks]
1.1
Discuss the impact of agricultural development on poverty reduction and food
security. Give at least ONE (1) practical example of both poverty reduction and
food security from your country, region or area to support your answer.
Agricultural development plays a crucial role in poverty reduction and food security.
When agricultural production increases, it creates more jobs, increases income and
reduces poverty. Moreover, it leads to an increase in food supply, making food more
affordable and accessible, thereby improving food security.
One practical example of this is the success of the Green Revolution in India. The
introduction of high-yielding varieties of seeds, modern agricultural techniques and
increased use of fertilizers and irrigation led to a significant increase in crop
production. This not only increased the income and standard of living for many farmers
but also reduced the prevalence of poverty in rural areas. Additionally, the increased
agricultural output led to a more secure food supply, thereby improving food security
for millions of people.
In conclusion, agricultural development has a significant impact on both poverty
reduction and food security. It is crucial for governments and organizations to invest
in improving agricultural productivity and supporting farmers to ensure a more
equitable and secure future for all.
1.2
Traditional agriculture is very common in less developed countries (LDCs), and it is
characterised by risk and uncertainties. Discuss the impact of traditional agriculture on
agricultural productivity with specific reference to source of fertilisation, off-farm
employment and land use. Give at least ONE (1) practical example each of source of
fertilisation, off-farm employment and land use to support your ans Traditional
agriculture often relies on natural fertilisation methods such as crop rotation, animal
manure, and composting. While these methods are sustainable, they may not always
provide sufficient nutrients for high agricultural productivity. This can lead to lower yield
and decreased overall productivity for the farmers.
