QUESTION 1
1.1.
(a) Construction of meaning:
The construction of meaning in reading involves the reader's ability to relate the symbols
and words on the page to concepts already stored in their memory. This background
knowledge or knowledge structure, also known as "schemata", is formed through the
individual's cognitive development and their sensory motor experiences. Children construct
their understanding of the world through physical activities and interactions, which shape
their knowledge structure and cognitive skills. This knowledge structure helps readers make
sense of a story and relate it to what they already know about life.
