DUE DATE: 7th April 2024
Question 1
Residential settlement pattern is defined as the distribution of buildings and houses in a
geographic region. There are types of settlements residential areas, the four main types are:
urban, rural, compact, and dispersed settlements. In compact settlements, the houses are close
to each other, often joined, while in semi-compact settlements, there is a good amount of space
between buildings. In dispersed settlements, there are few houses spread far apart. Rural areas
are vast land spaces with a few houses or buildings and an equally fewer number of people.
Rural areas have fewer infrastructural systems than urban centers, i.e., towns and cities. Rural
settlement populations often depend on pastoral and agricultural activities for their sustainability.
Urban settlements, or urbanized areas, are the most populated of the settlement types and
usually consist of the largest land area. Urban areas are the most developed of the different
types, with advanced infrastructure and many buildings. Urbanized areas are densely
populated, mostly non-agricultural areas.
