All 6 learner’s strengths are reading. Ana, Bilal, Chen and Mihai obtained a reading band of 7.0, whereas Delphine and
Francesca both obtained 6.0. Irrespective, they all have excellent reading skills. However, the students have different
weaknesses. Ana and Francesca’s weakness is listening. Ana’s listening band is 5.5 and Francesca’s is 5.0. Bilal and Chen’s
weakness is speaking. Bilal’s speaking band is 6.0 and Chen’s is 5.5. Delphine and Mihai’s weakness is writing. Delphine’s
writing band is 5.0 and Mihai’s is 5.5. Judging from this, they all need to improve on their weaknesses in order to achieve
their required band.
Which two skills have you chosen to teach in this lesson? Why?

The two skills I have chosen to teach is speaking and listening. I have analyzed the data by adding each band to find the
lowest rating in order to decide which two skills requires development. Both speaking and listening have a total of 34.5, whilst
reading has 40 and writing 35. Using this outcome and with careful consideration, I have chosen to help my students improve
their speaking and listening skills as it encourages room for improvement. Furthermore, my calculations show that my
students need to improve these two skills as a class. Working on these two specific skills will help all my students achieve
their required band effectively. Part 1 of the exam will focus on listening and part 2 will be focused on speaking.

I have chosen the topic “work” because majority of the students want to improve job prospects. Work is an important topic in
the IELTS speaking exam, therefore I want to ensure my learners improve their speaking skills as well as gain confidence to
communicate work related concepts. This topic will not only prepare them for IELTS exams, but also for their future career.
Furthermore, practicing business English using the topic work will allow my students to drill on specific vocabulary,
grammatical structures, communicating clearly and concisely as well as develop active listening skills. Therefore, this topic
allows me to create interactive and important strategies to help my learners prepare for exams and improve their speaking
and listening skills.
