BARCODE
, Dear student
The purpose of this tutorial letter 102 is to assist you when writing assignments and studying the
module. This module is based on reading and writing. It requires practice. You need a certain
degree of proficiency in English in order to master academic literacy. We therefore intend to
guide you through the various resources for the module to learn successfully. We are a distance
institution. We rely on technology, print and at times face-to-face. Enjoy reading this tutorial
letter and ask for help from tutors, e-tutors, lecturers, and support staff where you need
guidance.
It is important that your assignment is presented in a legible and formal way. As there is no
official cover page, please make sure that whatever you use is professional. Regarding the
length of essays, you are advised to comply with the number of words required rather than the
number of pages mentioned.
For those of you who will type the assignments, we recommend that you use Arial font,
12 point, and 1.5 spacing.
Semester assignments
The questions in this module are based on the learning outcomes formulated for this course.
Several components of academic English, reading and writing were tested in your responses.
Broadly, these comprise an understanding of content, expression and presentation. In your
answers we look for evidence of, inter alia, critical reading, skimming and scanning skills,
application of understanding, reflexive response, coherence and correctness, grammaticality,
paragraphing and spelling.
You need to focus on the length of your responses. We deduct marks if you do not follow the
instructions. In general, your essay should be properly structured, and coherent with logical
topic development. The essay should demonstrate excellent use of grammar and vocabulary,
and be properly edited and proof-read. In addition, you are required to use a high level of
creativity because you need to display your ability to gather information from various sources
and collate it in the most coherent, relevant and grammatically correct format.
During the course of the semester we will be posting feedback on assignments. You are
advised to frequently visit myUnisa, and to interact with your tutors and e-tutors for more
guidelines. We will also make available specific rubrics for some of the assignments.
