PREVIEW
At the core of human development lies the need for an understanding of why individuals
develop in the way that they do. Theories of human development help to provide
explanations for this by offering an organised set of ideas that explain the process of
development. Kail et al. (2019) identified five general perspectives that influence current
research on human development: psychodynamic theory, learning theory, cognitive
theory, ecological and systems theory, and theories involving the life-span perspective,
selective optimization with compensation, and the life-course perspective. In this
discussion, we will focus on the psychodynamic theory and the learning theory,
discussing the main ideas of each theoretical perspective and their position on
developmental issues within the biopsychosocial framework.
Psychodynamic Theory:
The psychodynamic perspective, rooted in the theories of Sigmund Freud and
developed further by Erik Erikson, holds that development is largely determined by how
well individuals resolve conflicts they face at different ages. The main idea of the
psychodynamic theory is that personality emerges from the conflicts that children
experience between their innate desires and societal expectations. This perspective
emphasizes the role of early experiences and the unconscious mind in shaping
behavior and personality throughout the lifespan.
