Introduction to the module & field of Career Psychology or Career Management
Several definitions exist for the term ‘career,’ these include the broad understanding that the
term represents a sequence or combination of occupations or jobs that an individual may
assume during their lives. Career management thus looks at how practitioners use their
understanding of career psychology to conceptualise work experiences from the individual’s
unique perspective, their life roles assumed throughout the lifespan and within the context of
their environmental and sociocultural circumstances.
What is a career and why is it so important?
A career can be defined as a profession of an individual, along with the history of jobs that one
has followed throughout one's life, and all the training and qualifications that have allowed an
individual to enter the workspace. The significance of career is seen in the way that it provides
meaning to the lives of people.
The field of career counselling and career psychology is not only limited to guiding students,
but it can also include different individuals in different industries. We can see this at the
beginning of the discipline’s history and how it was used to assist and tend to the needs and
interests of workers who were being exploited during the First World War. This guided the
understanding of vocational education within the workers and of reforms to occur within labour
legislation and career guidance. This can be seen as it was also used in career planning for
military service members re-entering the workforce and society after the Second World War.
When a discipline has a history based on previous biases, how or what work goes into
ensuring that it moves forward as properly principled.
The formation of an ethical body or institution, like HPCSA (Health Professions Council of
South Africa), are important as they regulate and clarifies the conduct needed by professionals.
They ensure that standards are in place and are maintained for the protection of the public.
They take into account the history of the discipline and take measures in place that will avoid
individuals from having their rights violated. These institutions work alongside the law and
regulations to ensure that professional conduct is maintained.
Researchers also do the meaningful work of ensuring that theories and assessments from abroad
are applied in a local context. This prevents having unreliable and misrepresentation of
individuals in the country in which these theories are conducted on. This also prevents a
misunderstanding of citizens and untrue research or true results.
