The Khoikhoi had various experiences and responses to white settlement at the Cape from
the mid-17th century to the mid-18th century. Initially, the Khoikhoi were willing to engage in
trade with the European settlers, exchanging livestock for goods such as tobacco and iron.
This period of trade brought some level of cooperation and mutual benefit. However, as the
Dutch settlement expanded, the Khoikhoi began to experience encroachment on their grazing
land and a loss of their traditional way of life. This led to resistance and conflict, as the
Khoikhoi saw their land being taken without their consent. This resulted in the outbreak of the
Khoisan-Dutch wars, which demonstrated the Khoikhoi's determination to defend their land
