, Question 1:
1.1 The nativist theory, first introduced by Noam Chomsky in the 1960s, is the theory
that argues that humans are preprogramed with the innate ability to develop and
learn language. This inborn ability is called the language acquisition device (LAD). An
infant simply needs to activate this in their language environment in order to rapidly
learn a language. Many adults do everything possible to help the learners to see how
the sounds relate to meanings and to recognise the underlying language
organisation. This interaction is not limited to verbal queues as facial expressions
and touch are also involved.
1.2
Phase 1
I will prepare for the reading of the text I chose by creating an atmosphere of
optimal receptiveness and involvement. In my example I will use the book called
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”.

I will start by playing the theme song of the movie. I will then discuss the setting of
the book and explain in brief the necessary background information and new or
unfamiliar terms the students may encounter

I would then start a group discussion to determine who is familiar with this text of
similar text.

Phase 2
I will subdivide the text into reading units according to the time available. I will then
start reading aloud with feeling the first page of the book

I would then ask the class to give me feedback about what they expect from the
book according to what I just read and the background information given.

I will then ask the learners to finish reading the first chapter by themselves.

Phase 3
I will then ask each learner what they read in the first chapter. What they enjoyed
and what they didn’t like, will form part of this discussion.

I will ask them to write down how they think the story will progress. I will then ask
each learner to read a paragraph aloud to the class to check for any reactions to the
text. I will also use this information to determine if there was problems in
understanding the text. I will ask the class to imagine what they read as they will
describing what they read in the following group activity.
