Detailed Answers
,Question 1: Contextual Questionnaire
Description of the School
The school I did my practical teaching in is located in a suburban area that is
predominantly residential, surrounded by small businesses and community centers.
Accessibility is not a challenge, as there are various public transportation options
nearby. Since being established in 1995, the school has expanded significantly, both
in infrastructure and the student population, reflecting its capacity to adapt to the
needs of the community.
The facilities are modern and include well-equipped science laboratories, a computer
room filled with functional devices, a library that, despite its potential, is underutilized
due to a shortage of updated resources, and expansive sports fields that cater to the
school’s athletic programs.
With an enrollment of around 800 learners from Grades 7 to 9, the school reflects a
diverse mix of students, consisting of roughly five classes per grade. Our teaching
staff includes 40 teachers, which creates a favorable student to teacher ratio of
approximately 20:1. Most of the educators hold recognized qualifications in
education, with several possessing postgraduate credentials that enhance their
teaching toolkit.
English serves as the primary Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT), although
other subjects are sometimes taught in the local language, depending on the
students' proficiency levels. This bilingual approach ensures that all learners can
engage with the content effectively.
Description of the Classroom
The classroom I taught in is of moderate size, comfortable enough to accommodate
around 30 learners without cramping their space. Desks are aligned in neat rows to
facilitate both teacher-led instruction and collaborative activities, with adequate
space provided for learners to move around freely.
Equipped with essential teaching aids, the classroom features a whiteboard, a
projector for multimedia presentations, and ample seating arrangements. However, a
noticeable limitation is the scarcity of resources for hands-on activities, compelling
students to share textbooks, which can hinder engagement during collaborative
tasks.
, In terms of atmosphere, the classroom is generally vibrant, with most learners eager
to participate in lessons. The teacher’s efforts to foster an inviting learning
environment are evident through classroom decorations, showcasing educational
posters and students’ work, thus instilling a sense of pride and ownership among the
learners.
Description of the Learners
The students in my classroom consisted of approximately 30 learners with a diverse
range of abilities, offering both challenges and opportunities for differentiation in
instruction. Most learners displayed motivation towards their studies and came
prepared for classes, although a portion struggled to maintain focu s, predominantly
due to distractions encountered in their home environments.
The majority of students hail from lower-middle-class backgrounds, which presents
challenges such as limited access to educational resources at home and a lack of
parental support in their academic pursuits. Participation levels varied significantly,
where some students were quite vocal during discussions, while others remained
more reticent. Notably, incorporating group work proved effective in encouraging
broader engagement and interaction among students.
Description of the Mentor/Subject/Learning Area Teacher
My mentor teacher embodies an impressive wealth of knowledge in the subject area,
adeptly intertwining content mastery with effective pedagogical strategies. With over
15 years of teaching experience, my mentor has honed skills in classroom
management and lesson delivery, which I aspire to emulate.
Together with their extensive background in education, this mentor demonstrated
extraordinary support throughout my practical engagement—offering constructive
feedback and encouraging the exploration of innovative teaching approaches. They
guided me in creating lesson plans and refining my teaching strategies, enhancing
both my confidence and competence in classroom management techniques.
