I appreciate this being online for students to use. However, I am not completely satisfied with the level of detail. I still believe its a good resource.
Frankie- Een
This chapter begins with the narrator telling the reader that it's late at night
when she finds a rat on her windowsill. It is standing on its hind legs and its
claws are pointing towards the window. The narrator says that she doesn't
scare easily but this rat isn't normal because it is pitch black with glowing
red eyes. She looks closer and sees that it's made out of cardboard and its
heart has been cut out. Its red tail goes over the windowsill. She attempts
to pick it up but it’s out of her reach. She is freaked out by this. She says
that only the caretaker, Oupa Shorty, has the keys to get to the area
behind her house. She says maybe it's the neighbour, Wacko, or his friends
who put it there, but why?
It begins raining and the rat begins to melt away. She can't go out because
her mom locks the door, even though she believes that at 15 years old
she's old enough to have the key. Her mom is a light sleeper and will hear
her walk across the room.
The next morning, she runs down the stairs earlier than normal. We find
out the narrators name is Frankie, and that her family are German. Her
mom warns her of the outbreak of measles but instead of getting irritated
she thinks about the rat.
Her mom, Elena van Luffelen, is a vegetarian, short, has a weird fashion
sense, and she makes jewellery for a living.
Frankie sees that the rat tail leads out to the stairs and decides to go check
it out. She finds a book entitled "Banksy: Wall and Piece" and then her
father calls her for breakfast.
Twee
Ben van Luffelen is Frankie's dad. He has wild hair, hairy arms and he
comes from Flanders. He hangs a photo of the Duchess of Brabant's castle
on the wall of his office at the cooking school. Every two weeks he goes to
his home town, Turnhout, for a film festival. He also goes to the Durban
Film Festival but Frankie doesn't go with to that one, she stays with her
grandmother in the retirement village. Ben speaks Flemish and French just
to taunt Frankie. He is a chef and has a cooking school.
Tarantino is the film club teacher and he loves drama.
