Question 1
1. What are some of the challenges you have faced or are currently facing in your studies? Can
you describe a specific situation or situations where you encountered a setback in your academic
journey?
Remote learning led me to believe that I had an abundance of time, prompting me to take on a retail
job, marking the start of an extraordinary chapter in my life. Juggling educational responsibilities,
work, and other obligations proved to be a formidable challenge. The combination of retail shifts,
numerous assignments, exams, and concurrent deadlines resulted in significant stress and pressure.
The scarcity of time often led to hasty decisions, deferrals, and missed deadlines, which became
commonplace and severely impacted my performance.
Furthermore, the absence of encouragement from my family hindered my ability to maintain focus
and dedication towards my academic pursuits, rendering my objectives seemingly unattainable.
Certain courses appeared to be designed solely to prevent students from graduating. Struggling to
comprehend or connect with the subject matter is exasperating and saps the remaining vestiges of
energy, inevitably leading to procrastination.

Managing time effectively is a daunting task when coordinating multiple courses, assignments,
projects, and extracurriculars, particularly as a mother to three young children under ten. I had
aspired to secure NSFAS funding upon application, aiming to forge a career for myself and my
children, given my unemployment status and reliance on social grants for their upbringing, but
unfortunately, it didn’t come to fruition.
Procrastination is a common pitfall for many students, including myself, often deferring tasks until
the last moment, which not only induces stress but also compromises the quality of our work.
Motivation can be elusive, and staying consistently engaged with studies is challenging, more so for
less captivating subjects. The lack of peer interaction, the struggle with online learning formats, and
distractions at home further diminish motivation, compounded by the absence of suitable study
environments.
Understanding certain subjects or topics can be particularly challenging, necessitating extra effort to
comprehend and remember the material. Financial constraints mean that some of us, myself included,
cannot afford the prescribed textbooks or the transportation costs to access campus facilities
designated for studying.
Distractions abound, from social media to personal relationships and individual concerns, all of
which detract from our focus and productivity.
The anxiety associated with tests and evaluations is another hurdle, where the pressure of such
high-stakes situations can negatively impact our performance.
