ASSESSMENT 3: YEAR MODULE

ACTIVITY 1

1.1. .
1.1.1 Three environmental issues faced by South African citizens.
• Biodiversity loss
• Water scarcity
• Climate change

1.1.2 The implications of the above-mentioned environmental challenges are:

Biodiversity loss

• South Africa is one of the world's most biodiverse countries, featuring unique
flora and animals. Biodiversity loss can have major effects on ecological
activities such as pollination, water purification, and carbon sequestration that
are endangered by climate change, invasive species, and habitat loss. This can
have an effect on the general health of the ecosystem, leading to more frequent
and severe natural disasters. It may also have an impact on tourism, which is
one of the country's key sources of income.

, Water scarcity

• Despite having many rivers, South Africa is one of the countries in the world
with the lowest water availability. Lack of access to clean drinking water has an
impact on many communities, particularly in rural and impoverished locations.
Conflicts between people and water-dependent industries, like agriculture,
mining, and tourism, can arise as a result of water scarcity. Health problems
might result from it, especially for vulnerable populations like children and the
elderly who might not have access to clean drinking water.

Climate Change

• Climate change is already having a significant negative impact on South Africa's
agriculture, health, and way of life through temperature rise, droughts, and sea
level rise. Droughts and floods may get worse due to climate change, leading
to crop failures, water shortages, and higher food prices. People and towns who
depend on agriculture for a living could suffer economic losses as a result.
