ASSIGNMENT 02
SEMESTER 1 2024
, 1.1) Give a detailed description (in your own words) of the learner-centred
method you will advise Thato to use and justify why you have chosen this
method in the context of the Grade 7 class given above.
The learner-centered teaching method I would advise Thato to use is Cooperative Learning. Cooperative
learning is an instructional approach where students work together in small groups to achieve shared
learning goals. In this method, students actively engage in discussions, problem-solving, and decision-
making processes, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
In the context of the Grade 7 EMS class and the topic of "The Economy: Needs and Wants," Cooperative
Learning is particularly well-suited for several reasons:
Promoting Active Engagement: Grade 7 students are at an age where they are developing their social
skills and seeking opportunities for active participation. Cooperative learning encourages all students to
actively engage in the learning process by working together in groups. By collaborating with their peers,
students are more likely to stay engaged and motivated throughout the lesson.
Enhancing Social Skills: Cooperative learning provides students with opportunities to develop essential
social skills such as communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. In the context of the EMS class,
where understanding economic concepts involves considering different perspectives and collaborating
with others, Cooperative Learning can help students develop effective communication skills and learn to
work productively with their peers.
Fostering Critical Thinking: The topic of "The Economy: Needs and Wants" requires students to think
critically, analyze information, and make informed decisions. Cooperative learning encourages students
to actively participate in discussions, challenge each other's ideas, and construct meaning
collaboratively. By engaging in group activities and peer interactions, students can deepen their
understanding of economic concepts and develop critical thinking skills.
Building a Sense of Community: Cooperative learning creates a supportive learning environment where
students feel valued, connected, and empowered. By working together towards common goals, students
develop a sense of belonging and ownership in the classroom. This sense of community fosters a positive
classroom culture, where students feel comfortable sharing their ideas, asking questions, and taking risks
in their learning.
