1. Background Notes on Esther Mahlangu
Esther Mahlangu was born in 1935 in a small village in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
She comes from the Ndebele people, known for their stunning artistic traditions. The
Ndebele women, including Esther, are famous for painting their homes with bold,
geometric patterns using bright colors.
Esther started learning this art form from her mother and grandmother when she was
just 10 years old. Her dedication and skill have made her one of the most famous
Ndebele artists in the world.
